The rock group Blondie was a quintessential part of the New York cultural scene. I decided to shoot at the Chelsea Hotel as an appropriate context. Debbie Harry arrived late in a funk and I found myself having to do some ‘group integration’ work. Ultimately, we ended up shooting outside on rooftops and on a balcony that I was concerned would come down at any moment. Despite the rocky beginning, Debbie rose to the occasion and we wound up working harmoniously together and coming up with some very strong imagery. -- Norman Seeff

The Chelsea Hotel backdrop really sells the whole scene — you can almost feel the dusty hallway and that late-arrival tension in Debbie’s pose. Print quality is sharp, and the blacks hold up nicely under light. Definitely a conversation piece in my living room.

The way Debbie Harry’s mood comes through in this shot is incredible—you can feel the Chelsea Hotel atmosphere without any staging. The print itself is sharp and the contrast really brings out the gritty, documentary vibe I was hoping for. It’s the centerpiece of my living room now.

The black-and-white print captures the raw energy of that Chelsea Hotel session perfectly, and the photo paper has a nice matte finish that keeps glare off the frame. I’ve got it hung by my desk and find myself staring at Debbie’s mood every time I glance over—it’s like a little piece of 1979 punk h
